Into the Wild Dialectical Journal

As you read Into the Wild, by Jon Krakauer, you will keep a dialectical (double entry) journal. Write one entry for each chapter. See the sample entries in the box at right.
You have until the week of Nov. 18 to finish the book and schedule a book conference with me. You will schedule a time at nutrition, lunch or after school for your conference. We will have a conversation about the book and I will ask you to share a few of your entries with me. I will check to see that the journal is complete, give you your grade, and return the journal to you at that time.

Persuasive Speech

Starting Tuesday, Oct. 22, you will give a speech answering the question, to what extent have we achieved the ideals stated in the Declaration of Independence?
You may want to start with a rhetorical question or other attention grabber.
You may use the first person (I, we) but don't overuse it.
You may use note cards. Cards are preferable to sheets of paper because they do not obscure your face and are not as noticeable if your hand shakes.
I will pull names at random out of a bag to determine the order of speeches.
